The Digital Personal Data Protection Act, 2023 (DPDPA) marks a significant milestone in India's privacy landscape. As organizations increasingly rely on personal data to deliver products and services, the law aims to provide individuals with greater transparency and control over how their information is collected, processed, and used.

Under the DPDPA, a Data Principal refers to the individual to whom personal data relates. The law grants Data Principals a set of rights that enable them to exercise greater control over their personal information and hold organizations accountable for responsible data processing.

These rights are designed to strengthen trust, improve transparency, and ensure that individuals have meaningful participation in decisions affecting their personal data.

### What Rights Do Data Principals Have?

Under the DPDPA, Data Principals have important rights that enable them to exercise greater control over their personal data. These include the ability to access information about personal data processing, request corrections or erasure where applicable, withdraw consent, seek grievance redressal, and nominate another individual to exercise their rights in certain situations.

Along with these rights, the law also outlines certain responsibilities that Data Principals must observe while exercising them.

Understanding these rights is essential not only for individuals seeking greater control over their personal data but also for organizations responsible for enabling and responding to such requests.

### Watch: Data Principal Rights Explained

To help individuals and organizations better understand these provisions, we have created a short video that explains:

- The five Data Principal Rights under the DPDPA

### The Growing Need for Data Principal Rights Management

As awareness of privacy rights increases, organizations are likely to experience a growing number of requests related to access, correction, erasure, consent withdrawal, nomination, and grievance redressal.

Responding to these requests requires more than a simple email inbox. Organizations need structured processes to verify identities, route requests to the appropriate stakeholders, maintain audit trails, monitor response timelines, and demonstrate compliance with regulatory requirements.

Without a centralized approach, managing rights requests can become operationally challenging and increase compliance risks.

### Enabling Compliance with TurtleShield DPRM

To support organizations in addressing these challenges, Ardent Privacy's TurtleShield Data Principal Rights Management (DPRM) solution provides a centralized framework for managing the complete lifecycle of Data Principal Rights requests.

The solution helps organizations streamline request intake, implement verification controls, maintain audit-ready records, automate workflows, and monitor compliance activities through a single platform.

By establishing effective rights management processes, organizations can improve operational efficiency, strengthen privacy governance, and enhance trust among customers, employees, and other stakeholders.

As DPDPA compliance initiatives continue to evolve, enabling Data Principal Rights effectively will remain a critical component of a successful privacy program.
